Astigmatism is an eye illness wherein there is an uncharacteristic curvature of the eye lens. Traditionally, the approach to correct astigmatism is to wear eyeglasses. In our family with 7 members, a couple of us have astigmatism, my brother and I. My brother’s astigmatism was discovered earlier than mine. And since he already has flawed eyesight, implying his vision is not 20/20 anymore- it just made the circumstances worse. He had to wear eyeglasses constantly unless he was washing his face or sleeping. A year or two had passed and yet his eyesight did not improve and he still suffered astigmatism. And since the disorder is not astigmatism alone, his eye grade changed over time and he had to change his glasses. Sadly, the maintenance is quite expensive and is incessant.

As for my case, I have a 20/20 and 20/25 vision and is stricken astigmatism too. Like my brother, I had to wear corrective eyeglasses also and because I was so not used wearing something for my eye, I often don’t wear it and more often lose it. It was very inconvenient and annoying, I thought.

It was in the later part of 2008 that Lasik laser eye surgery was suggested by a family friend. He said it was only a minor surgical procedure and that the healing from it was speedy and that he was able to see its effect and the improvement it has done to his sister. We were first suspicious and thought it was very invasive but then my brother was very eager to try it. He was 22 when he went through the surgical procedure.

It was his left eye that was subjected to surgical treatment first. My brother said there was no hurting at all. He only sensed some sort of force to his eye and naturally the dryness; but there is no major pain, per se. The whole process took only 14 minutes and even after that, my brother did not whine of any twinge or halos or blurring of vision in any way. He was advised to take antibiotics and eye drops to help maintain the wetness of the operated eye. My brother was directed to wear an eye shield especially at night, avoid chomping seafood for at least two weeks and avoid things that might injure the operated eye. Only a few days after the operation, my brother’s eyesight got better and he doesn’t wear his eyeglasses any longer. A week later, his left eye vision were 20/15- almost normal.

LASIK Laser eye operation is an outstanding alternative for my brother and for those who have eye problems. It made possible the things we thought were without a solution. My brother, to date, doesn’t need to wear glasses. It did not only cure his astigmatism but also enhanced his vision on the whole. Hopefully, at the end of this year, he will have the surgery for his right eye and we are looking forward to another excellent outcome. We highly advocate Astigmatism Surgery.
